Tariffs and Your Supply Chain: What Alberta Trades Should Know About Sourcing in 2026

Tariff headlines move fast, and most of them are aimed at big-ticket goods like steel, aluminum, and vehicles. But the consumables that keep a jobsite or warehouse running, cable ties, labels, small hardware, work lights, get caught in the same trade policy shifts, even when nobody is talking about them directly.

Why smaller consumables get overlooked, but still get hit

A shipment of plastic cable ties or labeling supplies from overseas gets classified under the same tariff schedules as much larger commercial goods. When a tariff rate changes on a broad product category, it changes the landed cost of these smaller items too, even though they rarely make the news.

What tariff-aware sourcing actually means

It means picking product categories and countries of origin that fall under lower-risk classifications, and building in enough lead time to reroute or requalify a supplier if a rate changes. It does not mean avoiding imports altogether. For many consumables there is no domestic manufacturing alternative at a comparable price point.

What this means when you place an order

Ask your supplier where product is actually sourced from, not just where it ships from. A supplier who can tell you the country of origin and has already built tariff exposure into their pricing is going to give you more stable pricing over time than one who gets surprised by a rate change and passes a sudden increase straight through.

Bulk ordering ahead of known policy changes can make sense, but only if you have the storage space and the product does not have a shelf-life concern. For most industrial consumables like ties, labels, and storage bins, this is a reasonable hedge if you know a change is coming.

The practical takeaway

Work with a supplier who is already tracking this so you do not have to. That is the value of a distributor relationship over ordering directly from an overseas manufacturer with no buffer between you and a policy change.

Gridwell builds sourcing decisions around current trade conditions so Alberta trades do not have to track tariff schedules themselves.
