Most crews grab whatever cable tie is closest to the truck. That works fine until an inspector flags a plenum space wired with the wrong rating, or a tie snaps outdoors after six months in the sun. Picking the right tie up front saves a callback later.
Start with where it's going
Indoor commercial space with standard airflow: a general-purpose nylon 6/6 tie is fine. Above a drop ceiling or inside an HVAC return path: you need a plenum-rated, low-smoke tie that meets UL 94V-2 or better. Outdoors or anywhere exposed to sun for more than a few months: look for UV-stabilized nylon, usually black, rated for continuous outdoor exposure. Skip the standard natural-coloured tie outside, it goes brittle and cracks within a season.
Then check tensile strength
Most jobsite bundling does not need anything past 18 lb or 40 lb rated ties. Heavier cable runs, conduit support, or anything load-bearing should move up to 50 lb or 120 lb rated ties. Going oversized is not free: thicker ties cost more per piece and are harder to pull tight by hand on fine gauge wire.
Width and length matter more than people think
A 4-inch tie on a 2-inch bundle wastes material and leaves an awkward tail. Match the length to the bundle diameter, and go with a narrower width (like 1/8 inch) for low-voltage and data cabling where a bulky tie looks sloppy in a finished space.
Colour-coding is worth the extra step on bigger jobs
Using different colours for different circuits, phases, or trades cuts troubleshooting time significantly when someone has to trace a run six months later.
If you are specifying for a bid or an ongoing account, standardizing on one or two tie types across your crews also means less guessing at the truck and fewer wrong-part trips back to the supplier.
